See some pictures of Cambodia, taken July 2006

Cambodia is an interesting place to get out of Thailand for a few days.

It takes you about 1 hour 15 minutes from Bangkok to Phnom Penh.

Phnom Penh - some minutes to touch-down

Phnom Penh is a small city compared to Bangkok, and there are only a few international flights every day.

The airport is about 7 km outside of the city, visa after arrival, required 1 picture, USD 20,- and your passport.

It is now easy to visit the capital of Cambodia.

Phnom Penh Airport

Phnom Penh Airport is a small building, there are only some few international and domestic flights per day.

Central Market in Phnom Penh

In and around this Central Market Building, which has a Khmer style architecture are plenty of items for sale by the vendors. Most traffic in Phnom Penh is done by motorcycle, there are only few cars.

Phnom Penh - Khmer Style Buddhist Temple

You will find many buildings like that in Phnom Penh, and they are in very good condition. Generally, the city is very clean. It is safe to walk around by day, but not during late nighttime.

Along the river

Most interesting buildings, like temples, palace of the King

and some international hotels are located along the river.

Along the river during night-time

Some people still out in evening...Phnom Penh is a silent place to relax

Buddhist Temple in the Northern area of Phnom Penh

All the area around Buddhist Temples in Cambodia is remarkable clean. However be aware, that there are a lot of beggars, handicapped people and poor children in Cambodia. Sightseeing - do it yourself - is not always easy.

How to go around in Phnom Penh?

The best way to go around in and near Phnom Penh is using a motorcycle.

Do not drive yourself - it is dangerous, road are sometimes in a very bad condition. Traffic is on right side, but motorcycles are moving in all thinkable direction.

There are many friendly honest young men with some language knowledge, who want to show you the city and offering you a ride on the motorcycle for a few USD. - This picture shows my assistant with his motorcycle at the Phnom Penh Airport.

There is an official fee for motor-cycle transportation from/to the airport by motorcycle. Airport staff will give you a receipt and you have to pay USD 2,-.

Cambodia and its sad past...

The genocide in Cambodia was around 1975...you will notice many young people in the city and only few old ones.

Human bones and skulls can be seen everywhere. This is Toul Sleng Prison of Phnom Penh.

Execution place for Pol Pot's prisoners 'Killing Fields'

Remains of over 10000 bodies have been found in mass graves not far out of Phnom Penh and have been collected in this building, which is located inside the execution place.

Killing Fields - Bones and skulls for display

You might enter this building - you have to take off your shoes first as in any Buddhist temple.

The whole building is full with human bones and skulls, assorted into groups of gender and age.

Vacation trip? Not really!

These all were young people still alive 30 years ago.

Unbelievable, several millions of Cambodians were killed.
